FASEB's Statement on IDC

Description

On February 7, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced imposing a 15 percent rate for Facilities and Administration (F&A) costs on all research grants, effective February 10, 2025. This approach conflicts with existing contracts, resulting in a minimum 50 percent decrease in funding for vital research facility operations such as equipment maintenance, patient privacy compliance, and biohazard safety. On February 10, 22 states filed a lawsuit to block the policy, and a judge issued a temporary restraining order (TRO). However, the cuts will still apply in other states. FASEB issued a statement urging the administration to immediately rescind the February 7 announcement.

Take Action: Damaging Cuts to NIH Facilities & Administration Costs

On February 7, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced imposing a 15 percent rate for Facilities and Administration (F&A) costs on NIH-funded research grants, effective February 10, 2025. This drastic cut conflicts with existing contracts, resulting in a minimum 50 percent decrease in funding for vital research facility operations such as equipment maintenance, patient privacy compliance, and biohazard safety.

In response, on February 10, 22 states filed a lawsuit to block the policy, and a judge issued a temporary restraining order (TRO). However, the cuts will still apply in other states, and further legal decisions may eventually allow the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and NIH to implement the new policy. Now is the time to take action! Contact your Senators and Representatives to voice your concerns about the devastating impact these cuts could have on research and safety at institutions nationwide.
