Protection of Human Subjects Committee

The FASEB Board of Directors established the Protection of Human Subjects Committee in 2008 per a recommendation of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP).

The committee is authorized to determine whether a FASEB member society program involving surveys that evaluate educational programs and other social science endeavors are exempt from Institutional Review Board review (under HHS regulations at 45 CFR 46.101(b). The Committee ensures the appropriate communication of such a policy to all investigators.

Each Committee member has authority to deem a project as exempt according to existing regulations.

Qualification for exemption applies if all of the following conditions are met:

  1. Reviewed by the Principal Investigator and appropriate organizational officer of the constituent society for exempt status; and
  2. Further reviewed by the FASEB Committee for Protection of Human Subjects for exempt status.

The Committee for Protection of Human Subjects reports to the FASEB Board of Directors.
