Every day FASEB delivers real value to its members through a variety of programs and services of benefit to you and your society. Here are a few recent initiatives illustrating the value of a FASEB membership and our work for you and your society members. Spread the word about these member benefits your society receives—share this information with your leadership and staff.

Rallied for Medical Research
FASEB President Beth A. Garvy, PhD, joined more than 300 patients, scientists, caregivers, and other advocates on Capitol Hill for the Rally for Medical Research Capitol Hill Day. Garvy met with congressional staff to discuss long-COVID research currently underway at her home institution, the University of Kentucky, and urged staff to finalize the fiscal year 2025 budget for NIH, noting that delays in funding prohibit the agency from issuing new grants or starting planned clinical trials. Supported Your Members Who Are Caregivers
In September, 10 researchers at several FASEB full-member societies each received $5,000 through the FASEB CARES (Career Advancement and Research Excellence Support) awards. The awards acknowledge that family caregiving can be challenging to some of your members’ career advancement and are meant to help alleviate financial burdens associated with caregiving—enabling your members to continue their scientific training. Encourage your members to apply for the 2025 CARES awards, which will open next spring. Continue reading

Empowered Your Early-Career Researchers
Early-career researchers (ECRs) were encouraged to apply to the newly launched Fellows for the Future program. This program is designed for researchers from historically excluded groups who want to be more actively involved in their professional society. Selected fellows will be announced late fall. We also selected two ECRS for the FASEB Science Policy Committee, two ECRs as voting members on the FASEB Board, and two ECRs for the FASEB Publications Committee. These positions will enable ECRs to share their unique insights and opinions.

Expanded Scientists’ Impact as Science Advocates
To help scientists expand their impact as science advocates, we opened applications for the Howard Garrison Advocacy Fellowship and selected nine scientists from FASEB full-member societies as the 2024 cohort. This fellowship underscores FASEB’s commitment to advance science policy goals and support researchers’ training and professional development. Fellows will receive instruction in advocacy, science policy, science communications, leadership development, and career exploration outside academia. Continue reading

Facilitated a Rigorous and Equitable Peer Review Process
During Peer Review Week 2024, FASEB journals highlighted how advancements in peer review enhance the scientific publishing process for your researchers. Focusing on "Innovation and Technology in Peer Review," we demonstrated how tools like SciScore and AI-based reviewer matching improve transparency and inclusivity while protecting intellectual property. These efforts ensure a rigorous, efficient, and equitable peer review process for your researchers. Continue reading

Highlighted a Culture of Data Sharing
FASEB again partnered with National Institutes of Health for the third DataWorks! Prize. This challenge aims to celebrate and reward your members’ research teams that propose and execute groundbreaking secondary analysis and data reuse projects, contributing to the advancement of human health. Up to 10 winning teams will receive $25,000 each in Phase 1. Complementing the Prize was a DataWorks! Salon open to your members on grant budgeting for data management and sharing.

Solicited Researchers’ Captivating Research Images
Your members at all levels, from students to seasoned investigators, were invited to submit entries to the FASEB BioArt Awards. This annual awards program aims to bridge the gap between science and the public through art. It is designed to encourage creativity, engage a broader audience, and spark interest in the scientific process. This year’s award recipients will be announced in the fall. Continue reading
