President, President-elect, and Immediate Past President Position Description/Responsibilities
Term
One year as President-elect beginning on July 1 of the year elected. One year as President immediately following term as President-elect. One year as Immediate Past President immediately following term as President. All terms end on June 30.
Responsibilities
President
- Serve as Chair of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee, voting only in the event of a tie
- Act as a spokesperson for FASEB presenting to member society, funder, and other organizational meetings as needed and as scheduling allows
- Serve as a leader to address issues that may arise during their term
- Prepare for and attend monthly virtual Board meetings, weekly virtual Executive Committee meetings, and up to 3 in-person meetings of the Board
- Serve as a voting member of the Finance, Audit, and Investment Committee
- Serve as a non-voting member of the Science Policy and Advocacy Committees, with responsibility to monitor the committees’ delegated authority
President-Elect Responsibilities
- Serve as chair of the Advocacy Committee, voting only in the event of a tie, with responsibility to monitor the Advocacy Committee’s delegated authority
- Act as a spokesperson for FASEB presenting to member society, funder, and other organizational meetings as needed and as scheduling allows
- Serve as a leader to address issues that may arise during their term
- Prepare for and attend monthly virtual and up to 3 in-person meetings of the Board as a voting member
- Preside at meetings of the Board and Executive Committee in the President's absence, voting only in the event of a tie
- Serve as a voting member of the Executive Committee and attend weekly virtual meetings
- Serve as a voting member of the Finance, Audit, and Investment Committee
Immediate Past President Responsibilities
- Serve as chair of the Leadership Development Committee and preside over monthly virtual meetings
- Preside at meetings of the Board in both the President's and President-elect's absence, voting only in the event of a tie
- Prepare for and attend monthly virtual Board meetings, weekly virtual Executive Committee meetings, and up to 3 in-person meetings of the Board
- Act as a spokesperson for FASEB presenting to member society, funder, and other organizational meetings as needed and as scheduling allows
- Serve as a non-voting member of the Finance, Audit, and Investment Committee
- Serve as a voting member of the Executive Committee and attend weekly virtual meetings

The following are personal characteristics that the President should have:
- Excellent leadership and facilitation skills
- Demonstrated commitment to collaboration and team building
- Experience communicating the value of science to policy makers and the public
- Record of professional service
- Experience working with Member Society Councils and Committees
- Working knowledge of the federal budget process and structure
- Knowledge about and experience in biological and/or biomedical research or comparable experience
Time Commitment
- Up to 3 in-person Board meetings of 1.5 days each in Washington, DC, plus travel
- 1-3 in-person presentations to other FASEB-related constituents in Washington, DC (NIH, NSF, other societies, etc.). When possible, these presentations will be scheduled to align with Board meetings to limit travel.
- 2-5 member society board /council meeting presentations (typically virtual)
- Up to 2-4hours per week for various virtual meetings – Advocacy Committee, Executive Committee, Board, etc.
- 1-2 hours per week email correspondence
