Science Policy Update (Q2 2025)

The Science Policy Committee (SPC) generates position statements on policy issues of interest to FASEB and our member societies. Between April and June, the SPC engaged in the following actions:

  • Responded to a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking issued by the Office of Personnel Management seeking to reclassify senior policy-influencing positions within the civil service
  • Sent a letter to NIH Director, Jayanta Bhattacharya, MD, PhD on the agency’s initiative to reduce the use of animals in research
  • Sent a letter to Representatives Nicole Malliotakis and Aaron Bean, opposing the Save Pets, Animals, and Research Ethics (SPARE) Act. If passed, the SPARE Act would ban federal funding for animal research. Additionally, 31 community organizations joined a sister letter organized by FASEB.
  • Responded to the Department of Homeland Security’s Information Collection Request to extend the current requirement for collecting training plans from STEM Optional Practical Training students
  • Responded to NSF’s Information Collection Request regarding the Education and Training Application Pilot
  • Responded to an RFI issued by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Committee on Improving the Regulatory Efficiency and Reducing Administrative Workload to Strengthen Competitiveness and Productivity of U.S. Research seeking community feedback on areas in greatest need of reform to clarify and streamline administrative oversight

FASEB is grateful to the member society representatives who served on the 2024-2025 Science Policy Committee. We value the willingness of society volunteers to share their subject matter expertise that helped guide development of the Federation’s statements.
