The last Board meeting of FASEB’s 2022/2023 volunteer year kicked off on Thursday, June 1, at FASEB’s headquarters in Rockville, Maryland.
Key policy actions taken at the meeting included approval of FASEB’s response to the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG), and comments to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Scientific Review’s (CSR) proposed changes to the peer review of Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) fellowship applications.

FASEB Responds to NIH Recommendations for Improving NRSA Fellowship Review
The Board voted to adopt a Volunteer Code of Conduct to establish and promote high standards of ethical, professional, inclusive, and respectful conduct, and received program updates on DataWorks!, DEAI programs, and Open Science.
The Board appointed Sarah Ocañas as Early Career Representative on the Science Policy Committee, and Vrushank Bhatt as Early Career Representative on the Board of Directors.
President Kevin Kregel, President-Elect Mary-Ann Bjornsti, and Treasurer Cherié Butts updated the Board on the work of the Future Focus Task force. Board members spent substantial time providing feedback on concepts in development by the Task Force. These discussions culminated in the Board’s approval of funding up to $200,000 for advisory, legal, and development support for the task force and to extend the timeline for the task force’s work through December 2023.
The meeting concluded with recognition of Board members ending their terms on June 30: Vijay Kale (Board Early Career Representative); Holly Brown-Borg (AGE); Catherine Davis (ASPET), and Diane Duffy (SSR). Kevin C. Kregel formally passed the presidency Mary-Ann Bjornsti, who took office on July 1, 2023, and the Board expressed their heartfelt appreciation for Immediate Past President, Patricia L. Morris.
