Board of Directors June 6-7, 2024 Meeting Summary

The last Board meeting of FASEB’s 2022/2023 volunteer year kicked off on Thursday, June 1, at FASEB’s headquarters in Rockville, Maryland.

Key actions taken by the Board included the appointment of Kevin Gries and Saranya Radhakrishnan as early-career representatives on the Science Policy Committee, and Amy Engevik and Matt Yousefzadeh as early-career representatives on the Board of Directors. The Board also approved the 2023 Audit. The board was also briefed on the work of the Generative AI taskforce, and the inaugural cohort of Howard Garrison Advocacy Fellows.

The Board spent ample time on the Future Focus Task Force (FFTF) final report. The report summarizes the paths explored by the task force, a proposal for collaborative approaches to science society programs and activities, and a forecast of financial outcomes of these approaches. Four working groups focused on operations, meetings, publications, and professional development and career advancement will be convened to move from concept to a structure that FASEB and other organizations can agree upon and transition to. The Board provided direction on engaging societies through the working groups and approved the formation of the Working Group Integration Task Force. The Working Group Integration Task Force is charged with providing strategic oversight of the working groups and develop process for presenting final recommendations to the FASEB Board and the Boards/Councils of participating societies (expected in late November 2024).

The meeting concluded with recognition of Board members ending their terms on June 30: FASEB's inaugural Vice President for DEAI, Marcelo Bonini, early-career representatives Sophia Kaska and Denise Cornelius, and Board members Andrea Taylor, Robin Lorenz, and Patricia Morris. Mary-Ann Bjornsti formally passed the presidency to Beth A. Garvy, who will take office on July 1, 2024, and the Board expressed their heartfelt appreciation for Immediate Past President, Kevin C. Kregel.
