DEAI Committee Chair
Position Description/Responsibilities


Term

Two (2) years beginning on July 1 of the year following their term as Vice-Chair and ending on June 30 of the second year with final approval conferred by the FASEB Board of Directors. After completing the term, the past Chair serves one (1) year as a member to assist the new Chair.


Responsibilities

  • Partner with the staff liaison(s) to develop and prepare for DEAI Committee meetings
  • Lead monthly DEAI Committee meetings (voting only in the event of a tie)
  • Participate in DEAI subcommittee meetings, as available and interested (non-voting)
  • Serve as an ambassador to promote FASEB’s DEAI initiatives at the request of the FASEB president
  • Partner with FASEB Committee Chairs, as needed, to identify opportunities to collaborate and share best practices.
  • Represent the DEAI Committee at FASEB Board meetings as requested

Characteristics

Biographic, demographic, and scientific diversity in governance is an overarching goal of the Federation, and the Board seeks to appoint members to Federation committees who represent this diversity.

The following are personal characteristics that the Chair of the DEAI Committee should have:

  • Demonstrated passion for DEAI
  • Understand the challenges and concerns of underrepresented minorities in the biomedical research community
  • Excellent leadership and facilitation skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration
  • Record of professional service, including active membership in a FASEB Society
  • Expertise relevant to the development and implementation of DEAI and/or professional development programming for research-intensive and associated career paths, and prior or current engagement with a member society DEAI committee (or related group)
  • Knowledge and experience in biological and biomedical research or comparable experience
  • Willingness to leverage professional networks (individual and/or group connections) for subject matter expertise

Time Commitment

  • Monthly 1-hour committee meetings, plus time required to review and complete action items
  • Monthly 1-hour discussions and meeting preparations with staff liaison(s)
  • 1-2 hours per month for conference calls with various Committees as necessary
  • Presentations to FASEB related constituents, member societies, potential collaborator entities a couple of times per year
  • 2-3 hours per month email correspondence
