January 1–March 31, 2022

Every day FASEB brings real value to its members. Here are just a few recent initiatives that demonstrate our dedication to you and your society members. Spread the word and share this information with your leadership and staff.

Shaping Policies, Programs, and Initiatives to Benefit Your Society

The FASEB Board of Directors is comprised of representatives from all FASEB Full Member societies. The Board met in-person for the first time in over two years March 24-25. The Board recommended federal funding levels for fiscal year 2023, approved several policy responses, and provided critical feedback for significant Federation initiatives. As an added bonus, Chief Medical Advisor to the President of United States and NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, MD, accepted the 2020 FASEB Public Service Award presented by President Patricia Morris and Immediate Past President Louis Justement.

Condemning Bullying in the Scientific Community

FASEB’s commitment to providing safe and collaborative environments for your members and the entire scientific community was the impetus behind issuing a public statement in response to the resignation of the former director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Discriminatory behavior, sexual or verbal harassment, intimidation, bullying, or assault are not tolerated at FASEB facilities, during FASEB-sponsored or managed events, or among staff, volunteers, or other participants. Advocating for Federal Research Agency Funding

Advocates from FASEB and nearly all of its member societies met with Congressional leaders and their staff to discuss fiscal year 2023  funding recommendations at this year’s virtual Capitol Hill Day. Many of your members and their invited guests provided real-life examples of why federally funded research is vital to the vibrancy of the U.S. scientific enterprise.

To build on these advocacy efforts, FASEB hosted a congressional briefing with the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges to demonstrate the value of federal research with animals. Society members, congressional leaders, and staff learned the powerful role of animal research in safeguarding scientific and economic progress while enabling life-saving treatments for humans and animals.

Facilitating a Culture of Data Sharing and Reuse

Several FASEB DataWorks! salons provided a forum for your members to share best practices and solutions for data sharing and reuse. These virtual salons covered such topics as the benefits of data sharing for your members’ research, the support funders can provide for data sharing and reuse, and how DataWorks! can help your members comply with the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy that will take effect in January. The salons are a component of the new FASEB DataWorks! initiative, which is designed to help your members navigate the open data landscape and comply with NIH requirements for NIH-funded research.

 Giving Voice to Early-Career Investigators

Many of your early-career members applied for voting positions on the FASEB Board and Science Policy Committee. The Board created Early-Career Representative positions to better represent the unique insights and opinions of this critical group of investigators and to foster dialogue between current and future generations of researchers. Selected candidates will be announced in July.

Enhancing Your Members' Advocacy Efforts with New Factsheets

New factsheets were released to help your members’ advocacy efforts. The newest addition to our animal research factsheets, “Animal Research: Necessary for Scientific Progress,” explains the limitations of nonanimal models in research and illustrates how and why animal research is the standard for biomedical research.

We all appreciate the important contributions your postdoctoral scholar-members make to the research enterprise. Despite their contributions, not all postdocs have equal access to basic benefits. A set of factsheets is now available to help your members communicate the value of postdocs and to help advocate for greater equity in access to benefits for all postdocs.

Supporting Your Postdoc Community

FASEB staff joined with representatives from AAAS/SEA Change and the American Geophysical Union to host sessions at the National Postdoctoral Association’s annual meeting. The sessions focused on benefits for postdocs and support for diverse postdoc communities. FASEB is a long-standing supporter of the NPA and its overarching mission to support postdocs.
