July 1–September 30, 2023

Every day FASEB offers real value to its members by providing programs and services of benefit to you. Here are just a few recent initiatives that demonstrate the value of a FASEB membership and our dedication to you and your society members. Spread the word about these member benefits your society receives—share this information with your leadership and staff.

Advancing Diversity and Inclusivity
FASEB remains committed to pursuing our diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusivity goals. We opened a second round of applications for FASEB CARES (Career Advancement and Research Excellence Support) to support your members’ career development. CARES provides $5,000 awards to alleviate burdens associated with caregiving—enabling your members to continue their scientific training, professional development, and career progression. Encourage your members from historically excluded communities to apply; applications are due October 27. Apply here

Building Your Members’ Advocacy Skills
Nine scientists from several FASEB member societies were selected as the inaugural Howard Garrison Advocacy Fellows. Announced in September, these scientists are taking part in a 10-month cohort experience that provides instruction in advocacy, science policy, science communications, leadership development, and career exploration outside academia. The Howard Garrison Advocacy Fellowship is open to life sciences researchers in all career stages at any FASEB Full Member society. The Call for Applications for the 2024 cohort will be announced in the spring. Meet the 2023 Fellows

Encourage your members to shine a spotlight on your society’s science by applying to organize an SRC in 2025. Applications will close February 8. Read more

Rewarding Your Members’ Exceptional Data Practices
Your members were encouraged to submit their data sharing or reuse projects to the DataWorks! Prize, a joint initiative of FASEB and NIH Office of Data Science Strategy to support data sharing and reuse in the biological and biomedical community. The submission site for the prize closed in July. Winners will be announced this fall. Winning research teams will share a $500,000 prize purse for their exemplary research project. Read more

Casting a Spotlight on Your Members’ Research Images
To captivate public attention and foster greater interest in biological research, a select group of winning BioArt Award entries are on display at the Science Museum of Virginia. The exhibit, “BioArt: Finding Beauty in Research,” features images and videos from some of your members’ research. The exhibit will remain on display through Spring 2024. To continue to cast a spotlight on researchers’ bioart, a Call for Entries was issued for the 2023 BioArt Awards. Winners will be announced this fall. Read more

Advocating for Research
FASEB President Mary-Ann Bjornsti, PhD, was among the more than 300 participants at the Rally for Medical Research in Washington, DC. Rally participants urged Congress to support the National Institutes of Health funding level for FY 2024 of at least $49.2 billion, as the Senate Appropriations Committee recommended. Celebrating Peer Reviewers
This year’s Peer Review Week provided an opportunity to thank your members who serve as peer reviewers, especially reviewers for the FASEB Journal and FASEB BioAdvances. With the theme, “Peer Review and the Future of Publishing,” FASEB Editor-in-Chief Loren Wold, PhD, highlighted our appreciation to peer reviewers and noted the changing publishing landscape, the ongoing vital role of peer review in shaping scholarly communications, and changes for the FASEB Journal.
