Vice President-Elect for Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion
Position Description/Responsibilities


Term

One year beginning on July 1 of the year elected and ending on June 30 of the following year.


Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Vice President and staff to develop and prepare for DEAI Committee meetings
  • Participate in monthly DEAI Committee meetings
  • Serve as Chair of the DEAI Committee in the Vice President’s absence
  • Participate in DEAI subcommittee meetings, as available and interested (non-voting)
  • Support development of DEAI programs and related efforts
  • Present subcommittee recommendations to the Board
  • Serve as an ambassador to promote FASEB’s DEAI initiatives

Characteristics

Biographic, demographic, scientific, and employment sector diversity in governance is an overarching goal of the Federation, and FASEB encourages leadership candidates who represent this diversity.

The following are personal characteristics that the Vice President-Elect for DEAI should have:

  • Demonstrated passion for DEAI
  • Record of professional service, including active membership in a FASEB society
  • Strong interest in DEAI policy issues in the biological and biomedical sciences, and prior experience communicating those issues to policy makers and/or the public
  • Understand the challenges and concerns of historically excluded researchers in the biological and biomedical research communities
  • Expertise relevant to the development and implementation of DEAI and/or professional development programming for research-intensive and associated career paths
  • Demonstrated experience communicating a vision and transforming strategy into action with proven results
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills that build relationships, internally and externally, with the ability to influence, collaborate, and build consensus
  • Knowledge and experience in biological and biomedical research (or comparable experience)
  • Experience serving on an organizational governance Board, Council or Committee
  • Willingness to leverage professional networks (individual and/or group connections) for subject matter expertise

Time Commitment

  • Monthly 1-hour DEAI Committee meetings, plus time required to review and complete action items
  • Monthly 1-hour Board meetings, plus time required to review and complete action items

  • Monthly 1-hour discussions and meeting preparations with Vice President and staff
  • Weekly 1-hour Executive Committee meetings, plus time required to review and complete action items
  • 3 in-person Board meetings
  • 2-3 additional in-person commitments, such as the Science Policy Symposium and Capitol Hill Day
  • 1-2 hours per month for conference calls with various committees, as necessary
  • Presentations to FASEB related constituents, member societies, potential collaborator entities a couple of times per year
  • 2-3 hours per month of email correspondence
